This week we will be joined by NJ Department of Health's State Epidemiologist, Dr. Tina Tan, MD, MPH. Dr. Tan will give an overview of how COVID-19 emerged globally and NJ's initial public health response and share a summary of NJ data collected. Tina Tan, MD, MPH
Dr. Tina Tan is State Epidemiologist/Assistant Commissioner of the Division of Epidemiology, Environmental and Occupational Health at the New Jersey Department of Health, where she oversees program areas in general communicable disease surveillance and control, immunizations, environmental and occupational health, and cancer epidemiology. During her time at the Department, she has directed investigations, public health responses, and planning efforts regarding emerging issues such as West Nile virus, bioterrorism-related anthrax, SARS, pandemic H1N1 influenza, post-Hurricane Sandy efforts, imported viral hemorrhagic fever cases, Zika, e-cigarette/vaping product use associated lung injuries, and COVID-19.
Dr. Tan received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University, medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Master’s in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in addition to completing an applied epidemiology fellowship with CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine/Primary Care at New York University Medical Center and is board-certified in internal medicine. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor with the Department of Epidemiology at the Rutgers University School of Public Health.
